Summary

In 1935 a solitary hut with associated Roman and Early Saxon objects was discovered and excavated. The hut was initially identified as Iron Age with later Roman occupation, but in the 1950s it was reinterpreted as a grubenhaus or sunken-featured building of Early Saxon date.

1935. In gravel pit north of marshes.
Hut site found, although the south side half had been destroyed.
Remainder excavated by R.R. Clarke for Norwich Research Committee.

Oval 13ft (4m) east to west, 6ft (1.8) north to south. Floored with rough cobbles, posthole.
Early Saxon pottery, spindle whorl, pear-shaped loom weights, mixed with Roman pottery.
Bones of pig, ox, sheep.
Charcoal of oak, hazel, ash, hawthorn, gorse or broom, blackthorn.
Hut re-floored once and Roman wares in later occupation.
Interpreted as Iron Age. See (S1) and (S2)
