Full Description
1961. In spoil from left hand gatepost into wood.
Pottery, 16th to18th century plus two pillar like fragments that could be kiln furniture. Brickwork seen nearby about 1m (2 to 3ft) from hedge between two ash trees. NB field east of wood was called Pot Kiln 12 Acres on 1846 tithe map. [1].
1980. Found in watermain trench on edge of ploughed field adjoining above gatepost.
Large sections of 16th to 17th century red pots. [2].
Identified by A. Gregory (NAU).
E. Rose (NAU), 19 February 1981.
The last mentioned are in fact much 16th/17th century brown-glazed oxydised earthenware including rims, handles etc; some other fabrics; one black glazed sherd; one underfired base sherd; one spacer tile with thick green glaze. All quite probably kiln rejects.
Also two medieval unglazed sherds, probably strays.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU) 18 November 1981.
