Summary

Metal-detecting and field walking between 1975 and 2023 recovered Neolithic to Bronze Age worked flints (including scrapers); Early Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jetton; a post-medieval token and a range of other Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Roman nail cleaner; numberous Early Saxon brooch fragments (some heat distorted); potentially Early Saxon melted copper alloy blobs or droplets; Middle Saxon pins; a possible Middle Saxon spoon fragment; a potentially Late Saxon copper alloy unidentified object; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval horse-harness pendant and binding strip from box or casket; a possible medieval lead spindle whorl; a medieval/post-medieval dagger scabbard chape and coppper alloy vessel fragments and post-medieval belt or harness mounts, a book clasp, lead cloth seals and a writing lead. The number and character of the Early Saxon finds suggest the presence of a mixed-rite Early Saxon inhumation and cremetion cemetery in the south-western portion of this field.

The character of the Early Saxon finds suggests that this is the site of an Early Saxon cemetery. Evidence of burning on some of the finds suggest that this was potentially a mixed-rite cemetery, comprising a mix of inhumation and cremetion burials. An additional find of similar character, but with no evidence of burning, has been recovered to the south of this field and is recorded under NHER 18431 at [4] - suggesting that the cemetery may extend beyond this area. A suggested extent of the Early Saxon cemetery is recorded as Context 3.
A. Beckham (HES), 20 March 2023 and P. Watkins (HES), 13 October 2024.
