Summary

Earthworks and cropmarks of a possible medieval moat, enclosures, field boundaries and a building are visible on aerial photographs. Some elements are visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017, and these may still survive as earthworks. Medieval and post medieval pottery has been collected from the area in and around the cropmarks.

Earthworks and cropmarks of a possible medieval moat, enclosures, field boundaries and a building are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The area of these remains has been extended to the west and south to include all of the cropmarks in this area. Part of a rectilinear enclosure is visible as an earthwork in the northeast part of the group in 1946 (S1). This has previously been interpreted as a medieval moat. Although this is possible, when it is viewed with the surrounding cropmarks it appears to form part of a more extensive group of rectilinear ditched enclosures. Cropmarks of a possible two-celled rectangular building are located within one of the enclosures to the south of the possible moat at TF 9356 1773. It has external dimensions of at least 34m by 18m. A circular pit cropmark is present in the centre of its western room. These cropmarks are located immediately to the west of Manor Farm (NHER 17415) and are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. To the west of the enclosures are cropmarks of field boundaries, probably also of medieval to post medieval date. Within one of the fields is a cropmark of a rectangular pit, probably an extraction pit, surrounded by an incomplete enclosure. It is aligned parallel to the field boundaries and is probably of a similar date.
J. Albone (NMP), 23 August 2007.

May 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
The medieval moat and related features described above are clearly visible as cropmarks on Google Earth aerial photographs from 2006 (S5). Some elements are also visible as low, poorly defined earthworks on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2017 (S6). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is possible that these earthworks still survive.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 23 May 2024.
