Summary

A two storey thatched timber framed house of about 1600, much altered. A brick wing with elaborate plasterwork was added later in the 17th century. A trial excavation in 1974 found medieval layers and pottery that pre-dated the house. An early 17th-century date for this building appears to be confirmed by a dendrochronological survey undertaken in 2024, which dated a ground-floor ceiling beam to the winter of AD 1600-1601.

2024. Dendrochronological Survey.
Sampling was restricted to the main ground-floor ceiling beams and the chimney bressumers. Core samples were taken from a total of six oak timbers, with one from a ceiling beam found to match the reference chronologies consistently and securely. This could be dated to the winter of AD 1600/1601. This makes it likely that the building is indeed of very early 17th-century date, being erected shortly after the fire of June 1600. The other samples did not produce any secure matching and thus remain undated.
See report (S7) for further details.
