Summary

A number of potential prehistoric "sub-crag" flints were recovered from this former sand quarry during the early 20th century. The nature of these objects is uncertain and it is probable that at least some were naturally fractured flints.

Map

Early 20th century. Field Observation.
According to (S1) W. G. Clarke recovered at least one "sub-crag implement" in the parish of Bramerton. One was apparently sold to a Dr. F. Corner in 1910. It is likely that these objects were recovered near the river in a quarry known as the "Bramerton Crag-Pit". In (S2) Clarke describes finding at least one implement in a "stone-bed" that was exposed in this pit, close to the bank of the River Yare.

It is recorded in (S2) that a flint was also recovered from this gravel deposit by H. W. Cockrill. The HES now hold the photograph of this object (S3) that was reproduced in (S2) (Plate XX).

It is likely that this site was the source of a number of flints that Cockrill donated to the Norwich Castle Museum in 1921 (NWHCM : 1921.1.16). These are listed in the museum's records as Neolithic flints that had been found "…in the river bed" at Bramerton.

It should be noted that although Clarke believed his 'sub-crag implements' to be Palaeolithic tools, most are now thought to be naturally-fractured flints.
Amended and expanded by P. Watkins (HES), 27 March 2014.
