NHER 11341 (Monument record) - Roman or Late Saxon/medieval iron working site

Summary

A large amount of undated iron working debris has been found at this site. The location of at least four possible furnaces/bloomeries have been identified. Roman, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds have also been collected and suggest that the iron working took place in one, two or all of these periods.

1975. Found on ploughed surface.
Traces of least three iron bloomeries burnt clay, roasted ore, much tap slag. 2nd century AD and medieval sherds. Note slag also built into church, see NHER 3410.

Context 2. Scatter of slag in southwest corner.
Context 3. 'Slight slag' outside northeast corner of wood, apparently running into it.
Context 9. 'Ten square metres slag - furnace!'.
