FINDS IN MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

British Museum:
It is recorded in (S1) that the British Museum holds 20 flint flakes from Hunstanton that are of "rather doubtful age, some possibly Palaeolithic".

Although the British Museum holds flints from Hunstanton its records suggest that none of this material is regarded as being earlier that Upper Palaeolithic in date. This was confirmed by E. Rose (NAU), who stated that the material he examined was probably Neolithic, the exceptions being a number of potentially Upper Palaeolithic flakes. Information from (S2) and (S3).

The most likely candidate for the material examined during the preparation of (S1) is an assemblage of Upper Palaeolithic/Mesolithic flints that was probably recovered from a pit in the cliffs at South Hunstanton (1930,1011). See NHER 1145 for further details.

These flakes are noted by Wymer on (S4), although this is primarily a reference to (S1). From the other references listed it is clear that Wymer was aware of the probability that this material is Upper Palaeolithic or later in date.

Leicester Museum:
Roe (S1) also listed 1 retouched flake/flake implement and 1 unmodified flake as being amongst the unprovenanced Palaeolithic material from Hunstanton. The former is an object that was found by in 1961 (NHER 1143). The Leicester Museum is listed, although it is unclear whether it holds one or both of these objects.

Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 17 December 2013 and 12 February 2016.
