Summary

A ring ditch of a possible post medieval date can be seen as cropmark on aerial photographs. It is possible that the feature relates to the site of a post medieval windmill. It is also possible that the feature could relate to a former Bronze Age barrow, or an undated curvilinear enclosure. Two possible pits can be seen to the south of the ring ditch with a third situated in between the ends of the penannular ring ditch. It is possible that these features may relate to the possible mill site.

West side of road opposite cottage marked as white square on 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (S1).
Ring ditch with two gaps in side touching road verge.
One gap has suggestions of thickening of ends, so perhaps a pennanular enclosure.

A ring ditch (see above) of a possible post medieval date can be seen as cropmark (S2-S7) on aerial photographs. It is possible that the feature may relate to the site of a post medieval windmill. A small cross-shaped feature is visible in the centre of the ring ditch on S4. This cross shaped feature most likely relates to the base of the former sails. Following the removal of the mill, the cross shaped feature may have been infilled with compacted mound material or rubble, hence it showing as a bank cropmark. It has been previously suggested (see above) that the ring ditch could relate to a former Bronze Age barrow, or an undated curvilinear enclosure. Although these interpretations are possible, the form of the ring ditch is similar to other medieval to post medieval windmill sites (such as NHER 32246) mapped by the project. Two possible pits can be seen to the south of the ring ditch with a third situated in between the ends of the penannular ring ditch. It is possible that these features may relate to the possible mill site. The ring ditch and possible extraction pits are in close proximity to two possible Roman or possible medieval- post medieval enclosures (NHER 45327) to the north.
J. Powell (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 27 September 2021.
