Summary

Excavations here in 1969-71 and 1993 recovered a variety of archaeological finds. These included Saxon and medieval pottery sherds, animal bones, medieval metalwork and human remains that possibly originate from the churchyard of St Cross' Church which was demolished in 1551. Despite the large quantities of Saxon pottery recovered from the pits here the site is believed to be of post Conquest date with no pre-Conquest Late Saxon activity on site. The animal bones seem to indicate butchery occurred here in the medieval period.
