Summary

The cropmarks of enclosures and/or fields of unknown but possible Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the former Brick Farm site, Costessey. The trackways previously recorded under this number are now under NHER 54473, see record for details. The site consists of an incomplete rectangular enclosure and ditches following the same alignment are likely to represent associated boundaries and possible represent fragments of further enclosures and/or fields. The date of these cropmarks is uncertain. It is assumed that they predate the trackways and boundaries recorded under NHER 54473, which are thought to be medieval to post medieval in date. A Roman date for the enclosures and/or fields is therefore a possibility, although there are currently no known finds of this date in the immediate vicinity to corroborate this interpretation. This site has since been destroyed by quarrying.

September 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of enclosures and/or fields of unknown but possible Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the former Brick Farm site, Costessey (S1, S3-S5). The site is centred on TG 1566 1229. The trackways previously recorded under this number are now under NHER 54473, see record for details. The site consists of an incomplete rectangular enclosure, potentially measuring 69m by up to 57m. Ditches following the same alignment are likely to represent associated boundaries and possible represent fragments of further enclosures and/or fields. The date of these cropmarks is uncertain. It is assumed that they predate the trackways and boundaries recorded under NHER 54473, which are thought to be medieval to post medieval in date. A Roman date for the enclosures and/or fields is therefore a possibility although there are currently no known finds of this date in the immediate vicinity to corroborate this interpretation. See NHER 54465 for fragmentary enclosures and ditches to the east that follow a similar alignment and may be of a comparable date.
S. Horlock (NMP), 07 September 2010.
