Summary

Three sides of a rectilinear enclosure of unknown date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. At its western end, it contains a small elongated curvilinear ditch or enclosure within it. The purpose of the enclosure is not known but it could feasibly relate to the site of a Second World War ‘Q’ type bombing decoy, the recorded location of which lies a short distance (approximately 230m) to the southwest.

Map

Field north of road and northwest of barn (demolished) marked on (S1). Cropmark of large rectangular enclosure containing two smaller subovoid enclosures.
Air photographs checked by E. Rose (NAU), 29 November 1976.

October 2025. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The undated rectilinear enclosure described above is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2-S3). Only one convincing ‘subovoid’ enclosure was identified within it, an elongated curvilinear ditch or enclosure at its western end; any other marks appeared to be of geological rather than archaeological origin. It has been suggested that the enclosure could relate to the site of a Second World War ‘Q’ type bombing decoy (NHER 32417).
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 20 October 2025.
