Full Description
Before June 1971. Systematic observation and recovery of sewer trenches, Baptist's Yard.
Sewer trenches cut through a sequence of medieval floors between 3.9m (13 feet) and 4.5m (15 feet) OD. The lowest of these was constructed of Niedermendig/Mayen lava millstone fragments. Cutting back of the trench sides in a 1.8m by 3m (6 by 10 ft) square area showed that the floors lay in a 0.45m (18 inch) deep depression, probably a sunken-floored hut in the surface of a major silt layer. Finds from within the 'hut' included sherds of Yorkshire jug, two Nottingham-type cooking pots, and East Midlands jug, southwest French jug and a Dutch cooking pot (S1). Sherds of Software and Stamford ware were found below the floor of the depression but extensions of the trench for 6.1m (20 feet) to north-west and north-east produced no further evidence of occupation.
A. Carter (KLAS).
