Full Description
Before June 1971. Systematic observation and recovery.
A north to south sewer trench cut through the south bank of an infilled stream bed. This lay 15m (50ft) north of the New Conduit Street frontage and 36m (120ft) north of the Purfleet. The bed of the stream, which was filled with a 1.5m (5ft) thick deposit of banded silt and peat, was at about 2.4m (8ft) O.D. Modern disturbance had destroyed both the north bank of the stream and the upper part of that on the south but sufficient remained to show that the stream must have been at least 3m (10ft) wide. Finds from the lower fill of the bed included two wooden bowls, see (S1), and sherds of Grimston, Yorkshire, and East Midlands jugs. The upper fill contained the neck of a late 15th century Siegburg jug, see (S1) and the rubble above this a mixture of 16th to 18th century red wares and stoneware.
See (S1) for further information.
A. Carter (KLAS).
