NHER 1191 (Monument) - Site of possible medieval bridge, New Conduit Street

Before June 1971. Systematic observation and recovery.
On two occasions trenches cut through timber bank-reinforcements similar to those seen at Baker Lane, Sedgeford Lane and Stonegate, see (S1). The main timbers of this lay at about 2.4m (8ft) O.D. In the black soil around and above the timbers were sherds of Yorkshire and Grimston jug, see (S1) Fig. 88 No.5, and southwest French jug, see (S1) Fig. 102 No.1a. From above this came sherds of red ware, see (S1) Figs. 106, 110, 114-5, Nos. 90, 194, 242, 244. Hinderclay type jug, see (S1) Fig. 105 No.27, North Holland slipware, see (S1) Fig. 123 No. 288, and Langerwehe and Diegburg stonewares. In the upper rubble there was a mixture of 18th century material including Staffs. Slipware, see (S1) Fig. 120 Nos. 259, 260, and tin-glazed earthenware, see (S1) Fig. 127 No. 364.

November-December 1997. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed Vancouver Centre redevelopment site (Trenches 1, 5 and 6).
Allocated Contexts 10 onwards as no context given in report for earlier finds.
Trench 1 (close to New Conduit Street frontage): Medieval Caen stone pillar or column, perhaps reused material from an ecclesiastical building. This may be the remains of a medieval structure which jutted out over the Purfleet, but this interpretation is by no means secure.
Trench 5: Remains of post medieval wall cutting through a deep levelling layer containing 13th-14th century pottery, brick and tile fragments.
Trench 6: Similar to Trench 5 including levelling deposits dating from the 13th to 15th centuries.
