Summary

The cropmarks of several possible pits of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs, and on the ground. The pits have also been interpreted as the remains of possible Bronze Age barrows.

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Location

Map sheet TF72NE
Civil Parish FLITCHAM WITH APPLETON, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

8 small chalk circles about 15m diameter with depressions in centres in ploughed field.
No evidence of date, but fragments of modern brick in vicinity.
A. J. Lawson (NAU) January 1976.

The marking of this site on the record map was inaccurate and has been corrected.

(S1) shows the western two of the eight circles in a different marking, and compared with (S2), it seems clear these represent the two infilled pits shown on (S3). (S2) shows only the western three of the remaining six circles and these appear quite different, as good possible Bronze Age ring ditches. (S2) also shows an extra, oval marking north of the scheduled barrow.
E. Rose (NAU) and D. A. Edwards (NAU) October 1986.

(S4), compared with 1946 RAF aerial photograph, shows that all of these features are old pits.
E. Rose (NAU) 13 March 1989.

29 July 1996. NLA air photography.
Part of site visible.
The two ring ditches/pits to the southeast can be seen most easily, others less clear.
H. Clare (NLA), 2 May 2001.
