Before June 1971. Systematic observation.
A number of deep trenches showed the surface of natural clay sloping sharply up from 3.6m (12 feet) O.D. at the south (St. James' Street) end of the site. Above this 0.6m (2 feet) of black marsh-like deposit and then 1.2m (4 feet) of grey-brown sandy loam. No finds. Pre Urban.
