Summary

A 16th-century timber-framed and brick shop that originally had domestic accommodation in a wing to the rear, but this wing has now been lost. Extensive repairs were carried out in 1969, but some sections of the original timber frame are still visible.

16th-century or earlier timber-framed house, with renewed façade to Norfolk Street. Victorian window in projecting upper floor of No. 147.

Now listed as 56A High Street, (S2) states jetty cut back in 1969. Very little survives of interior. Winder stair at attic level only.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Shop, originally with domestic accommodation to lost rear wing and upper floors. 16th century, altered many times, repaired 1969. Timber-framed with brick, rendered and colourwashed. Plain tiled roof. Three storeys and attic. Gable-end to street with 20th-century shopfront to ground floor...Jetty above reduced in depth 1969 when entire front wall rebuilt above this point...Gabled roof. Rear is pebbledashed and supported by permanent steel external frame. INTERIOR. One boxed bridging beam to ground floor. Winder staircase formerly situated in north-west corner and survives only at attic level. No features at first floor. Second floor with one chamfered bridging beam. Studwork to facade is of 1969. Roof of 1969 copying a clasped purlin type. Some fragments of original timber-frame detectable."
