Full Description
1970. Systematic observation and recovery during excavations. Investigation of any archaeological remains was hindered by two mechanical excavators becoming bogged down and taking 5 days to be extricated from the site.
Traces of well-preserved timber buildings were beginning to appear, but these had gone once the mechanical excavators had been removed from the site. All that remained was the stone wall defining the western edge of the site. This wall, which was traced for 24.4m (80 ft) was identical to the walls and foundations recorded further to the east (NHER 1212), being constructed of flint and mortar on a deep foundation trench filled with gravel.
Finds from the site included two barrel padlock keys, sherds of Grimston and Yorkshire jugs, Siegburg stoneware, late Grimston ware, red ware and Westerwald and Staffordshire stonewares.
See (S1) for further information.
