NHER 12168 (Monument record) - Icehouse, Hanworth Hall

Icehouse Grove on Ordnance Survey.
Owner at Hall says that remains of icehouse may still be seen somewhere in this wood, but was not happy about allowing access.
Described by [1] as a long winding tunnel leading to a shaft.

Icehouse seen and located at grid reference from public road to north.
Only a few feet from road but behind tall new fence.
Brick dome, formerly covered in earth but top cover has eroded away.
Some trees on it not of great age.
Doorway about 2m high in north side, brick arched, but offcentre to dome.
This together with [1]'s description may suggest it is of the comparatively rare (in Norfolk) type where the passage curves round the dome rather than entering at right angles (compare with example at Billingford Hall, NHER 7223).
Interior not seen.
Good for bats.
Date probably 18th/19th century (served 18th century Hall).
No obvious source of ice though some small ponds in woods around.

Further soil eroded from top shows clearly that the tunnel does indeed wind round the dome, rather than enter it at right angles.
