Full Description
1963-1970 (at some time). Systematic observation and recovery, rear of 104 to 106 High Street.
Cobbled areas and medieval walls underlying modern boundaries.
The walls were all of flint and chalk rubble on foundations filled with gravel or gravel and sand. They had been preserved beneath footings of later buildings, and none survived to a height of more than 0.45m (18 inches). The site produced no evidence for divided tenements. Little dating evidence survived. However, a cobbled surface containing sherds of Grimston and Yorkshire jugs makes it possible to identify it from a document of 1313.
The pottery from this site was very similar to that from NHER 1219. A 16th century jetton was also found here.
See (S1) for further information.
A. Carter (KLAS), E. Rose (NAU), amended A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 14 January 2019.
