Summary

A sewer trench on Stonegate Street cut through 13th to 14th century timber river bank reinforcements. Fragments of medieval pottery were recovered from around the timbers, and post medieval pottery was found in the rubble above the timbers.

Before June 1971. Systematic observation and casual discovery on north-south sewer trench outside Jews' Cemetery, Stonegate.
A north to south sewer trench cut through river bank reinforcements of the type seen at Baker Lane (NHER 1219), Sedgeford Lane (NHER 1210), and New Conduit Street (NHER 1191). The timbers lay immediately north of the modern curb line at a depth of about 2.4m (8ft). Sherds of Grimston and Yorkshire jug were recovered from around the timbers; 16th/17th century red wares and stonewares were recovered from the rubble above them.
