Summary

A concentration of post medieval pottery fragments indicate that this area was a pottery works. However, pieces of medieval pottery and a coin have also been found, and point to the area also being occupied in earlier times.

Post medieval pottery production site.
Concentration of sherds first noted by landowner (at that time the farmer) over twenty years ago.
Sample given to [1] about ten years ago, but nothing heard further.
Large proportion of sherds are from saggers, but very few 'Cistercian' type sherds that would have been fired in saggers.
Glazes green, very dark green, and brownish green.
Other forms include jars with bead or small flange externally just below rim. Rough date late 16th to early 17th century.
Few obvious wasters, but firing, colour and glazes very variable.
Area measures about 60m by 60m but according to landowner may originally have been more restricted; central area does contain greater concentration.
Subsoil boulder clay and chalky clay.
Amongst the post medieval spread but continuing slightly further west thin scatter of medieval glazed or unglazed ware.
