Summary

In 1923 a pipe trench was excavated. Iron Age to Roman pottery, Roman pottery and human skull fragments were discovered.

#August 1923. Stray Find.
Found when digging a pipe trench "close to lighthouse":
Human skull and pottery fragments of 1st century AD found.
La Tene influence in sternly marked cordons, characteristic of late native pottery (C. Fox notes).
?Roman date.
Donated to what is now the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (1923.1341).

These sherds were examined by T. Gregory at the CUMAA in April 1980 and identified as mostly body sherds in 'Belgic' wheel-thrown style, most likely dating to the conquest period (i.e. mid 1st century AD). There is also one sherd of fully Roman pottery - from a 3rd-century Dales Ware jar.
