Full Description
1975. Aerial photography.
Cropmark of circular enclosure, with entrance passage.
Located by E. Rose (NAU), 14 September 1977.
April 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch (see above) of an unknown, but probable Bronze Age date, is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2 and S4). A possible mound is also visible as a very low earthwork on the visualised lidar data (S3), within the interior of the ring ditch. The mound and ring ditch most likely relate to the site of a Bronze Age round barrow. It is also possible that the very low mound could relate to a natural feature. The feature has therefore been mapped by extent due to the uncertainty of its origin. As the lidar survey was flow relatively recently (2017) it is likely that the very low mound still survives. The ring ditch has been previously (see above) interpreted as a circular enclosure, with an entrance passage. Although this interpretation cannot be ruled out, the break in the ring ditch is likely due to geological cropmarks obscuring the northern section of the ring ditch, rather than a suggested entranceway. A further probable Bronze Age ring ditch (NHER 18337) has been recorded approximately 200m to the northeast.
