Full Description
June 1972. Listed Grade II.
November 1977. Field Observation.
Nos 1-9 (odd) King Street visited by E. Rose (NAU).
Georgian, good condition, red brick, Classical doorcase, hipped roof.
Compiled by E. Rose (NAU), 2 November 1977. Information from record card (S1).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 April 2023.
The side wall of this building is pre-Georgian. On Bell's 17th-century print it appears as stone. The windows have since been altered and replaced by Georgian sashes but the positions of the originals can be made out. The bricks between them are covered in rough scratchings, probably to hold plaster so as to make the brickwork appear as stone.
E. Rose (NLA) and E.M. James, 20 November 1998. Information from file notes (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 April 2023.
1993 revised Listing (S3) notes that this house was built for Sir John Turner around 1670 and refaced in around 1750. The Purfleet Quay return is given as early 18th century but see above.

June-August 2018. Building Survey and Laser Scanning Survey.
Record made of cellars beneath 1 King Street, ahead a proposed redevelopment that would see the conversion of this building and the erection of three new dwellings in the rear yard. A laser scanning survey was undertaken, which was supplemented by additional recording. The cellars comprise two distinct sections, with a square brick rib-vaulted chamber beneath 1 King Street and a much larger (and presumably more recent) barrel-vaulted cellar extending to the western, beneath the rear yard. The roof of the latter was encountered during the excavation of foundation trenches for the new buildings (see NHER 68107).
See report (S6) for further details, including photographs of the cellars and plans and elevations generated from the digital survey data.
