Full Description
October 1977. Building survey during reconstruction.
Early 19th century brick facade on house. Demolition revealed three arched areas inside, one blocked by a chimney stack. Surveyors regarded these as 15th century or earlier, but from photographs they look to the writer perfectly acceptable as 17th century.
See (S1) and (S2).
(S1) in fact notes four blocked arches on inside of the north wall which were considered by the authors to be at least 500 years old. The Norfolk Street front of the house appeared to have been entirely rebuilt in the 19th century.
This area of the town was surveyed by the Paving Commissioners in 1803. A plan of 1806 shows twelve properties 'improved' in some form or other and many more brown brick façades from this period attest to voluntary 'improvement' (S3). It is likely that the rebuilding of the Norfolk Street frontage dates from this period.
A. Cattermole (King's Lynn UAD), 23 November 2018.
