Summary

A layer of black charcoal with many prehistoric burnt flints in it was identified in the side of a drainage ditch or pipe trench. This may be a prehistoric burnt mound or hearth.

1977. Seen by A. Rogerson (NAU) in section in drainage ditch or pipe trench.
Layer of black charcoal ridden soil with profuse burnt flint. Around 10cm thick, at least 2m north to south and 1m east to west, minimum depth 1m, underneath layer of clean very natural looking gravel itself beneath topsoil. Called Mesolithic or Palaeolithic by A. Rogerson (NAU), but evidence?
