Full Description
1976. Aerial photography.
Ring ditch.
The central grid reference of this site has been altered from TG 4937 0249 to TG 4938 0245.
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a Bronze Age round barrow are visible on aerial photographs to the south of the White House on the Beccles Road (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 4938 0245. Other ring ditches and round barrows are located nearby (NHER 12777, 45207-8) and are located on an area of gently sloping land in-between Fritton valley to the south and the Waveney Valley and marshes to the west. This round barrow is located within an area of complex cropmarks, including possible late prehistoric enclosures and fields (NHER 45175) and a possible Roman or medieval road and associated field system (NHER 43591).
In the 1976 a ring ditch, 27m in diameter, is visible, with traces of an inner concentric ring (S2). Both of these ditches are quite irregular and the outer ditch does not appear to join, although this could be due to the archaeological cropmarks being confused with the agricultural tramlines. The parchmarks of a central mound, 18m in diameter, are visible in 1970 (S1).
S. Massey (NMP), 30 October 2006.
