Summary

The New Cut is a 19th century canal between the River Waveney at St Olaves, and the River Yare at Reedham. It is 4km long, is straight, was opened in 1833 and was designed as part of a scheme to link Lowestoft harbour with Norwich. It was hoped that the scheme would allow coastal vessels direct access to Norwich. The scheme was superseded by the construction of the Norwich to Lowestoft railway.

This watercourse is part of the early 19th century works that included Lowestoft Harbour, Oulton Dyke and the proposed Clarence Harbour at Norwich, this was built to link the Waveney and the Yare, but was superceded by the parallel railway.
Proposed by Captain George Nicholls in 1825 following earlier suggestions by W. Cubitt.
New Cut completed by 1833. Sold in 1846 to the railway.
