Summary

A tramway to Upwell, opened in 1881. It was closed to passengers in 1928 and to goods in 1966. Many relics of the line are in the Hermitage Hall Museum, Downham Market.

Enters Norfolk north of Elmbridge.
Original railway act of 1873 failed for lack of money. Replaced by tramway act 1881.
Opened to Outwell 1883, to Upwell 1884. Closed 1928 (passengers), 1966 (goods). Line taken over for road widening.
Elmbridge-Boyce's Bridge-Outwell Basin-(short stretch in Cambridgeshire,transferred to Norfolk 1990.) - Outwell Village-Upwell.

Outwell basin station remains, pillars from canal bridge in a garden fence; old coach body remains.(Gone by 2000)
Outwell village depot remains intact as a pallet repairing yard, length of track left in coal siding.
Gates to track remain at Boyces Bridge. A coach is in Cambridge Museum of Technology; see (S1).

Principal reference is (S3) which also tells of proposals to extend the line to Welney, and how Outwell Basin was the only station in Britain with lifebelts on the platforms; it also had coal chutes to the canal.
