Summary

When a house on this site was demolished a tunnel large enough to crawl into was uncovered. Later a crater opened up in the adjacent field. This could be a pit (as marked on the Ordnance Survey map), a tunnel or perhaps most likely a large drain leading to the pit. It may have been connected to Costessey Old Hall.

Map

April 1978.
When the house marked on (S1) was demolished, a tunnel was found large enough for a man to crawl into, but for a few metres (yards) only. Later in ploughing near same spot a huge crater opened up. Could this have been the pit marked on (S1), and perhaps a drain to it?
E. Rose (NAU), 26 April 1978.

This may have been connected with a building named as Costessey Old Hall marked in this area on (S1). Nothing is known about this building or its relationship with Costessey Hall to the north.
E. Rose (NLA), 9 December 2005.
