Location

Map sheet TG51SW
Civil Parish CAISTER ON SEA, GREAT YARMOUTH, NORFOLK

On map in Caister file (S1) showing findspots either R. R. Clarke (NCM) or C. Green (NCM) has marked the area around Croft Farm as 'Cremation urns etc probably Roman perhaps Anglian'.

D. Gurney (NAU) suggests this comes from various accounts:
Gunn (S2) refers to 'sepulchral urns a quarter of a mile to the northeast' (of what, he does not say) and also 'a complete urn from a claypit northeast of the church'.
Fox (see S3) refers to complete urn from claypit near the mill (NHER 8693) northeast of the church (NHER 8683 - not same urn as Gunn's?
Gunn (S2) also mentions 'coffins near the mill'.
E. Rose (NAU), 27 April 1988.

The latter quotation is given in full in (S3) as 'a large quantity of burnt wood, decayed wood, nails with wood adhering, and a human jaw partly fossilised'.
E. Rose (NAU).

The site is now beneath housing.
