Map

In piggery here row of angels' heads and in garden octagonal shaft used as ornament; said to come from St Olave's Priory.

July 1979. Visit.
Nobody home, but in searching for farm workers no such features such as those noted were seen. Much of barns shown on 6in Ordnance Survey map (S1) gone.
However note octagonal shaft in church (see NHER 10702) - was it moved to there? Could remains in fact have come from the Preceptory? (see NHER 12469). House itself is mid to late 19th century.
See file for further details.

However photographs (S2) by source [2] in file show one of the 'angel's heads' demonstrating that it is in fact a putto from a headstone of 18th/early 19th century date. Also some amorphous blocks of stone.

October 2000.
Further report of 'angel's head' carving in outbuildings. This is part of an 18th century headstone

See letter (S3) in file.
D. Gurney (NLA), 21 December 2000.

February 2001.
There is only one angel's head, not a row, and it is clearly, as stated, above part of a tombstone. The owners (owners since 1947) do not recall the shaft. The blocks of stone noted are simply sandstone fragments. All these are in a flint garden wall, probably 19th century, heightened in brick as a barn wall.
The house is in fact early 19th century, perhaps of 1844, the date on the barn.
E. Rose (NLA), 23 February 2001.
