The excavation revealed medieval and post-medieval finds and features.
The medieval phase of activity included the remains of post-hole timber structures and a large sub-circular pit. Finds from this phase included a small quantity of 11th to 13th century pottery.
The post-medieval phase of activity was represented by a brick culvert constructed from unmortared bricks laid on edge in a radiating pattern. The lack of finds and features dating to this period could be due to truncation of deposits from when the sports hall was constructed in the 1960s.
The 18th century foundations encountered are likely to be the remains of a rear range of outbuildings behind No. 50 St Giles Street that were demolished to build the sports hall and consisted of two parallel north-south red brick and lime mortar wall footings.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2) and (S3).
