Map

23 October 1978. Trench for sewer pipe across Catt's Hill 2m deep x 0.5m wide watched by E. Rose (NAU).
Passing near supposed findspot of Roman pot (NHER 7634) and Mesolithic axe (NHER 7632).
Pasture field recently subsoiled. Topsoil of varying depth - in places almost non-existent - over sandy subsoil, with several flecks and small lenses of chalk. Below this on high points of field dark red pebbly gravel and bright yellow sand; in depressions blue stiff clay. Topography suggests whole field has been quarried for gravel. Finds were all in base of topsoil/top of subsoil over whole length of trench, indicating disturbance. Consist of two pot boilers, one possibly humanly struck flake, small fragments of brick (possibly Roman, but could be recent) and modern piece
of pantile.
