Summary

A series of linear bank features can be seen on NLA aerial photographs 1977, 1974 and 1998, and on RAF aerial photographs from 1946. The date and origin of these features are uncertain. However, it is possible that these features relate to part of 18th century ornamental gardens layout, alternatively they could relate to drainage.

A series of linear bank features can be seen on NLA aerial photographs 1977 (S2), 1974 (S3) and 1998 (S4), and on RAF aerial photographs from 1946 (S5). Included amongst these features is the bank previously recorded on the NHER under this number. It lies between TF9434 4129 and TF9430 4136. In line with previous suggestions it seems possible that this is the remains of a causeway. This bank seems to remain raised slightly on some of the aerial photographs. Elsewhere it shows clearly as a white cropmark. There are also other banks visible as cropmarks and they all appear to be interrelated. These features cover an area of about 175m x 75m.
The date and origin of these features are uncertain. However, it is possible that these features relate to part of 18th century ornamental gardens layout (they are located near to the site of Warham Old Hall NHER 1843), alternatively they could relate to drainage (?).
There are also some other possible cropmarks within this area that have not been plotted as they are fairly indistinct and hard to determine.
H. Clare (NMP), 30 April 2003.
