Full Description
Foundations of rectangular building, 12m east-to-west, 3m north-to-south, in narrow strip of scrubland south of Fengate Farm. Bricks, modern size but unfrogged. Ditch which now defines east boundary of scrub is a diversion of the original watercourse which ran into a large, roughly circular pond immediately north of the building. The water then apparently ran under or through the building to emerge in a 1m wide channel which bore it off to the south. The sides of this channel are revetted for the first metre of their length by brick spur walls from the south side of the building-
The watercourse has since been diverted to the east of the building, and the blocking of the original channel is still visible.
Known locally as 'The Bone Mill'.
A. Gregory (NAU), 27 November 1978.
Built into red brickwork in a collpased section of wall on the west end of the Bone Mill and given to finder as a child:
Round sectioned limestone object. A shaft broken at both ends, surviving length 230mm, diameter at one end 75mm, swelling to maximum diameter 145mm just before narrowing to other end, part of a colonnade from a staircase or loggia in a high status building, presumably a country house.
A. Rogerson (NLA), 5 March 2002.
