Summary

This three-storey, mid 19th-century building consists of two shops (divided by Row 51), with accommodation above. It is built on the site of a late medieval building, with a substantial part of an associated 15th-century brick undercroft surviving in the cellar of No 34.

Plans and drawings (S1) in file of a brick undercroft, described as 15th century, under the old Freeman Hardy and Willis shop, and formerly extending eastwards under the road and south under Row 49 to No. 34 (formerly Cooper's, now a television repair shop). Partially filled in on plan.
Borough Council say No.34 was rebuilt some years ago.

Listing Description excerpt:
"Two shops with accommodation over, divided by Row 51. Mid 19th-century building on the site of 15th-century predecessors, considerable remains of which survive in cellar of No.34. Red brick. Slate roof.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys; two-window range. One late 20th-century ground-floor shop front right (No.34) and a late 20th-century bank facade to left (No.35). First floor with two bow windows each...Coved timber eaves cornice. Gabled roof with a rebuilt central ridge stack. Rear wing to No.34 extends west along Row 51…
INTERIOR of No.34: the cellar has a complete 15th-century double-chamfered depressed arch in brick with a plain hood mould. Further east is the remains of a second similar arch. Running west are tarred retaining walls, probably 16th century, to the north and south sides. Little else of interest in interior.
INTERIOR of No.35: has no visible items of interest. Cellar filled-in late 20th century. Attached to rear of No.34 is a three-storey warehouse block which is not included."
