Full Description
1834. 'At the side of a lane a little to the left of the road from Lammas to Buxton' (perhaps area of The Firs, 240 227?).
Hoard of wheat found.
In two adjacent pits at the bottom of a sloping bank 2.4m (8') high, covered by topsoil and recent gravel dumpings from an adjacent field, and cut into sand and gravel disturbed by rabbits. Antiquity of hoard is shown by roots of a very old oak tree penetrating them.
The topsoil immediately above the pits was 5cm (2') deep and was different from the topsoil in the rest of the field.
Letter from Mr. Nimmo, 28 August 1834 in (S1).
