Full Description
Various prehistoric worked flints collected by T. F. Newman in the first half of the 20th century. These objects are now held by the NCM (NWHCM : 1950.114.11).
Although the bulk of the collection appears to be Neolithic, Wymer (S1) has suggested that a tanged point may be Late Upper Palaeolithic. Wymer saw this as being the same object as the tanged Upper Palaeolithic flake or arrowhead from Cranwich described by Clarke in 1960 (S2). Robins and Martingell (S3) have however argued that the object discussed by Clarke is part of the H. H. Halls Collection (Site 16; NWHCM : 1924.83.16 : A; NHER 4952). They also described the Cranwich objects Wymer selected as not "…immediately convincing…" as Upper Palaeolithic finds.
R. Jacobi's records describe a Mesolithic microlith in this collection (S4). It is unclear whether this is one of the 2 unprovenanced microliths from Cranwich listed in (S5). The collection also includes 8 blades and 1 crested blade that are recorded by the NCM as potentially Mesolithic. These were probably identified as such by P. Robins (NCM).
The Neolithic flint implements in this collection are listed by F. Healy in (S6) as comprising:
7 Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads.
6 Neolithic petit tranchet derivative arrowhead, 1 triangular arrowhead, 4 piercers, 1 tranchet tool, 1 chisel, 4 chipped axes and 2 part-polished axes.
7 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead and 3 plano-convex knives,
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 2 May 2013.
