Various finds from old O.S field 49 (Curtis Field 35).
1954. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis at TL 6876 8906:
1 Mesolithic 'microlith'.
Information from (S1). Described in (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
1955. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis at TL 6873 8889 (Context 2):
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. Green Low type. Identified by F. Healy (NAU) from NCM photo. Information from (S1).
Previously recorded as NHER 14730.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
1964. Stray Find.
Found by F. Curtis:
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. Green Low type. Identified from NCM photo by F. Healy (NAU). Although this find is recorded in Curtis' catalogue as coming from Field 35 it should be noted that the grid reference given (TL 6887 8916) is probably incorrect, placing the find in the plantation to the east.
Previously recorded as NHER 14731.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
1964. Stray Find.
Found by [1] at TL 6872 8908 (Context 3):
1 prehistoric flint fabricator. Information from (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
1951-1965. Stray Find.
Curtis' catalogue lists a number of additional finds that were also found in this field (F35), but for which little additional information is given. The worked flints listed in (S1) and (S3) are as follows:
4 Mesolithic 'microliths'.
16 Early Neolithic leaf arrowheads.
1 Neolithic 'transverse' arrowhead.
12 'harpoon barbs' - probably Neolithic transverse petit tranchet derivative arrowheads.
2 Neolithic triangular arrowheads.
6 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowheads. Including 3 found 1951-1955 and 2 found 1953-1956.
8 'slug knives - probably Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knives.
8 scrapers.
43 other flint implements of unspecified types.
Also a bone/antler 'needle'.
A number of Curtis' finds from this field are now held by the King's Lynn Museum including:
1 misc. retouched piece. Information from (S1).
1 triangular arrowhead (KILLM : 1962.20.32) - probably one of those listed above.
1 arrowhead of unspecified type (KILLM : 1962.20.9).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
1985. Fenland Project fieldwalking.
Several discrete concentrations of material identified:
Site HCW BO (Context 3):
On edge of ridge. Small scatter of 'pot boilers' and worked flints. Max dimensions 18m E-W x 10m N-S. Site not included in final publication.
Site HCW BP (Context 4; TL 6847 8845):
On ridge just emerging from peat. Scatter of flints and 'pot boilers'. Max dimensions 29m N-S x 17m E-W. Site not included in final publication.
Site HCW 75 (Context 5; TL 6855 8851):
On south side of ridge. Sparse worked flints and a few 'pot boilers'. Min dimensions 28m N/S x 13m E/W. With the exception of a ?Mesolithic blade core the worked flints from this site were not closely datable.
Site HCW 76 (Context 6; TL 6863 8881):
On side of ridge above peat-filled depression. Moderate concentration of 'pot boilers' and a few worked flints. Max dimensions 34m N/S x 55m E/W. Worked flints not closely datable.
Site HCW 77 (Context 7; TL 6870 8900):
On fairly level plateau at Fen edge. Sparse concentration of 'pot boilers' and two undatable flint flakes. Max dimensions 40m NW/SE x 28m NE/SW.
Site HCW 78 (Context 8; TL 6860 8877):
On side of ridge above a hollow. Moderate concentration of 'pot boilers' with a small number of undatable worked flints. Max dimensions 30m N/S x 29m E/W.
For further details see project archive (S4) and final publication (S5). Finds now held by Norwich Castle Museum.
E. Rose (NAU) 31 May 1985. Amended and expanded by P. Watkins (HES), 9 November 2013.
