Full Description
1970. Stray Find (Finder's Field SN 405).
Various worked flints found on surface by [1] including cores, 'potboilers', assorted scrapers and waste material. Recorded on (S1), suggesting these were mostly Mesolithic. At least some of these finds were donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1970.529), where they are listed as a mix of Mesolithic and Neolithic pieces. Discoveries reported in (S2).
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 December 2013.
1970-72. Stray Find (Finder's Field SN 405).
Additional worked flints found by [1]. Recorded by (S3) as including a number of Neolithic pieces, including an axe, a fabricator, and a scraper (fragments mainly). Also held by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1972.603.5).
T. Clough (NAU). Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 December 2013.
This flints held by the NCM were examined by J. J. Wymer, with the Mesolithic pieces listed in (S4) as 29 cores, 44 blades/flakes, 66 scrapers and 5 miscellaneous pieces. The assemblage is notable for the large number of small, rounded 'button' scraper, the majority of which are made on partially cortical flakes.
According to R. Jacobi's records (S5) the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology hold a Mesolithic adze/axe that was probably found by [1] at this site (the grid reference is the same as that listed in the NCM's records). The Neolithic axe found in 1970-72 is noted in (S6) although no other tools of this date are listed.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 December 2013.
