Summary

Excavations here in 1973 in advance of a proposed redevelopment revealed an incomplete section of the south bailey ditch of Norwich Castle, which cut through a number of Late Saxon pits. A layer of a 15th-17th century makeup and 17th century housing and yard surfaces were also uncovered but these features were demolished in 1860. The majority of finds recovered by this work were pottery sherds including Saxon Ipswich and Thetford Ware.
