Full Description
September 1976. Chance Discovery.
Human skeletal remains were discovered while excavating a pipe trench on a building site.
Staff at the Norwich Castle Museum were contacted and the remains were excavated and examined.
The remains were determined to be of a male, aged 30-35 and approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with signs of arthritis in his feet, and an injury to the lower jaw which may have been cause of death. The remains were found in an extended positon, with head to the west, left arm by the side, and right arm across the chest. The orientation and posture indicate a pre-Christian burial, possibly of Early Saxon date.
HER Record Cards (S1) and in formation published in the Eastern Daily Press (S4) indicate that "several other bones" were also recovered, possibly related to one additional individual but the latter interpretation is unclear.
The HER Record Card for NHER 17462 (S1) duplicates this find of human skeletal remains, but also records that notes contained on the Norwich Castle Museum Record Maps state that "pot and animal bones" were also recovered from this location. It is uncertain whether this is correct.
The discovery was reported in the Eastern Daily Press (S4) and the CBA Journal (S3).
It was also recorded on Ordnance Survey Record Card (S2) and HER Record Card (S1).
The location of these remains was originally recorded as TG 199 103 [1], but was noted to be near Trilithon Close which is located approximately 150m to the northeast. The location has been amended to that reported in the CBA Bulletin which place the remains adjacent to Trilithon Close.
