FINDS RECOVERED BY H. LE STRANGE
The Norwich Castle Museum (NCM) and the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (CUMAA) both hold prehistoric flints that were recovered in Snettisham by H. le Strange. These two collections appear to come from the same site as both are as having come from "Field 310". This has previously been interpreted as a reference to an old O.S field number, which resulted in the creation of a record in the middle of the Field 310 shown on the early O.S maps (NHER 13335; TF 738 325). However, a comparison of O.S field numbers with the field numbers recorded by le Strange in the other locations where he recovered prehistoric finds suggests that the latter were almost certainly his own system of reference, unconnected to the O.S numbers. This appears to have been the conclusion of J. J. Wymer when he examined this material, with only a general grid reference given in (S1).
The CUMAA holds a collection of Mesolithic flints from this site (52.209A). These were listed by Wymer (S1) as comprising 6 flaked axeheads (without tranchet sharpening), 3 cores, 3 blades/flakes, 25 scrapers a-nd 1 microlith. This collection was also examined by R. Jacobi, who identified the microlith as a Class 2 type. Information from (S2). It is unclear whether this collection contains any later prehistoric material.
The NCM hold several Neolithic worked flints that were found at this site in 1960, including a leaf-shaped arrowhead and several scrapers (NWHCM : 1960.94). Information from (S3). These discoveries were reported in (S10) and are noted on (S11). A grid reference is given (TF 739 325) but it is noted in (S10) that this is only approximate. The arrowhead is also listed in (S4).
