Summary

Fieldwalking here in 1974 recovered several prehistoric flint implements as well as various multi period pottery sherds. Pottery types identified included Roman Samian ware from Gaul, Late Saxon Thetford-type wares and medieval glazed Grimston Ware. Metal-detecting between 2010 and 2023 recovered undated lava quern fragments; Iron Age, Roman, Early/Middle Saxon, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; Late Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a medieval jetton; post-medieval tokens and a range of other, Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Middle Bronze Age rapier blade fragment; a Middle Iron Age ring-headed pin; a Late Iron Age/Roman linch pin; Roman brooches and a key handle; a Roman to post-medieval lead weight; an Early Saxon buckle and brooch; a Late/Middle Saxon strap end; a Late Saxon harness pendant and Carolingian strap slide converted into a pendant; Late Saxon to post-medieval lead spindle whorls; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval key, harness mount and lead spindle whorl; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment and copper alloy rivet and a post-medieval clapper bell and lead cloth seal.

1974. Surface finds on ploughed field.
Samian base F33; central Gaul late 2nd century.
Nine post medieval sherds.
Twenty Thetford-type including rim and rouletted body sherd.
Twenty-three coarse medieval.
One glazed Grimston.
No marked concentrations but field was walked hurriedly.
Found by A. Rogerson (NAU) and member of the public [1].

Finder [1] reports scatter of medieval sherds stretches considerably further south, and 'somewhere within the area' a very abraded Neolithic flint axe.

Further details of the Neolithic axe, supplied by [1] to NCM 1977 but not passed on to NAU until February 1982, are: small, heavily damaged, facetted and polished. Heavily patinated.
Also in southern part of area a large prehistoric retouched flint flake and a scatter of pot boilers over at least one hectare.

Finds made 1970s-1980s and seen by A. Gregory (NAU) and A. Rogerson (NAU) 1985 are three sherds of St Neots, one sherd Stamford.
Thirteen sherds Thetford type including one applique with pre-firing hole bunghole?
