Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1979 and 1985 recovered Mesolithic and Neolithic worked flints (the former strays from NHER 16753); medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a post-medieval wine bottle fragment; an undated quern stone; a post-medieval coins and a small number of other metal objects. The metal finds include a medieval hasp, buckle, possible bridge bit and a scabbard chape.

Field to south of [1], pasture until 1977, rough in 1979. The earthworks described below are now recorded as part of NHER 53601.

Fieldwalking by [3]. Found at Context 1 (finder’s Area 1; north-west corner of field):
2 Neolithic flint flakes
29 medieval pottery sherds (including 5 Grimston).
2 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds (LMT).

Found at Context 2 (finder’s Area 2; same area as Context 1):
1 Neolithic flint blade.
7 medieval pottery sherds (including 1 Grimston).
2 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds (LMT).
4 post-medieval pottery sherds (2 stoneware Bellarmine and 2 lead-glazed earthenware) and 1 glass wine bottle fragment.

Found at Context 3 (finder’s Area 6; southern end of field):
14 Neolithic flint flakes, 3 notched flakes, 2 scrapers and 3 retouched flakes.
7 medieval pottery sherds (including 1 Grimston).
1 post-medieval coin and 1 pottery sherd (stoneware, ?Bellarmine).

Found at Context 4 (finder’s Area 7; south half, west side):
2 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds (LMT).
2 post-medieval pottery sherds (1 German stoneware, 1 Staffs. combed ware)
1 undated quern stone.

Found at Context 5 (finder’s Area 8; north-east corner):
1 Neolithic flint blade.
4 medieval pottery sherds.

1 ?medieval copper alloy cauldron repair.

1983. Fieldwalking.
Found by [3] and others at Context 1:
Medieval sherds including late medieval transitional. Post medieval sherds including salt glazed stoneware (Westerwald, Frechen and Staffordshire) and tin glazed. Raised central part of a medieval lava millstone.

From Context 2:
Post medieval cream ware and Staffordshire comb ware.

1985. Metal-detecting and fieldwalking.

1 medieval pottery sherd and 1 buckle.

Found at Context 11 (extreme north-west corner of field, previously within Context 1):
1 medieval pottery sherd (glazed Grimston), 1 hasp, 1 ?bridle bit and 1 ?dagger chape.

Found over hedge from NHER 16753:
7 Mesolithic flint flakes.
