Summary

Burnt chalky clay and fragments of Roman lava quern were recovered from a foundation trench in 1979. Also noted were animal bones, a possible post hole, a fragment of medieval pottery and a modern flower pot and pantile.

15 October 1979. Adjacent to site where Roman urn found.
Foundation trenches excavated into clayey sand with flints. Pocket of dark soil 80cm thick by 90cm wide; 75cm below surface; contained burnt chalky clay and fragments of Rhineland lava quern.
Identified by A. Rogerson (NAU).

Other burnt clay was found elsewhere nearby at 30cm on surface of natural. Animal bone at 75cm.
Post medieval brown glazed sherd at 30cm.
Possible posthole seen in bottom of trench at 1m, 30cm deep below this, contained rotting wood.
Modern flower pot and pantile in spoil.
