Summary

Excavation in 1970 revealed traces of two medieval buildings which replaced two Late Saxon buildings, with continuous occupation from the Late Saxon period through to the late 19th century when the site was set aside for the gasworks. Rubbish and cess pits produced groups of Late Saxon and early medieval pottery and animal bones. Later post medieval rubbish pits contained almost entirely locally produced coarse lead-glazed earthenware.

1971. Excavations by A. Carter for Norwich Survey Project.
Extensive post medieval disturbance but traces of two medieval buildings which replaced two Late Saxon buildings found. Associated rubbish and cess pits produced groups of Late Saxon and Early medieval pottery and animal bones including Dutch red-painted wares, Andenne and blue-grey handled ladle. Also post medieval rubbish pits containing almost entirely locally produced coarse lead glazed earthenware. [1]
Compiled by E. B. Green (NCM).

Excavations above also revealed evidence for early quarrying, followed by continuous occupation until the construction of the 1858 Gas Works.
